The Cornell University Academic Quiz Organization is proud to announce the Ron Loomis Pre-Regionals quiz tournament to be held February 3, 2001. While most invitationals are now contested on modified NAQT or ACF rules, the Ron Loomis Pre-Regionals (RLP) is designed to prepare schools for the somewhat different style of gameplay characteristic of "CBI-style" quizbowl. As such, the RLP is contested using CBI rules and "CBI-style" questions.* All questions will be written, edited, and playtested by the Cornell AQO. The RLP is intended to fill the need for a timed intercollegiate tournament to allow CBI schools (as well as all interested teams) the opportunity to adjust to a style of quiz bowl gameplay different from other tournaments. In line with standard CBI rules, the Ron Loomis Pre-Regionals will feature strict recognition, no nonverbal conferring, limited blitzing, etc.** (I recognize that this type of tournament isn't going to appeal to everyone. But the Cornell AQO also sees that there are many circuit teams that will be going into the Regionals weekend having prepared only by IMs and reading old questions in practice. And so we decided to try putting together an opportunity to better prepare for Regionals.) Now for the details: Registration Deadline: January 13, 2001 Late Deadline: January 27, 2001 Fees: (All dollar figures are US$) Team Fee: $75 Late Registration: $85 Discounts: Additional Teams: -$10 Buzzer System: -$5 Clock: -$5 Officials: -$5 Canadian schools: -$20 Non Circuit/ CBI only Schools: -$20 Minimum Fee: $35 Tournament Director: Kenny Peskin (kmp12_at_...) The Ron Loomis Pre-Regionals is licensed by the College Bowl Company to use official CBI rules and will be contested primarily as such*** While CBCI has licensed its rules to the RLP, all question materials and other tournament operations are being handled by the Cornell AQO--not CBCI. Kenny Peskin --- *To preempt any smartass comments, let me say that "CBI-style" refers to question length, style, and distribution. The RLP will feature shorter tossups, occasional variable value bonuses, and more emphasis on current events, women's studies, and black history. "CBI-style" does not refer to recycling old questions, "hose" questions, university chaperones, or anything dealing with some of the criticism CBCI has encountered in past years. The quality of our questions will be equivalent to invitational tournaments. The style of our questions will be different. **Complete gameplay rules can be found at http://www.collegebowl.com Click on the College Bowl icon, then on the Game Rules button. (However, Cornell AQO does reserve the right to modify some of the CBI rules, in the interests of saving time and conserving staff members.) ***For those that may have questions about issues dealing with "licensed tournaments" with CBI, no team participating in the Ron Loomis Pre-Regionals will be asked to enter into any agreement or contract whatsoever with CBI. The only "licensing agreement" is between the Cornell organizers and CBCI. This agreement was made so that we could use the exact CBI rules if desired and (more importantly) so that we could get a list of campus contacts for "once-a-year" schools. More information on licensing agreements, and the standard text of the agreement between Cornell and CBCI can be found on the College Bowl website. If any player or team, has any questions or concerns regarding "licensing agreements" in general or the Cornell tournament, please email me at kmp12_at_... (Additionally, Mary Oberembt mary_at_... of the College Bowl Company can best speak for CBCI.) We will try to accommodate any and all concerns any players may have.
