You know, I read all these reports about how people post quick results about their tournaments and say, "Details to come after I get some sleep", and I say, "Yeah, sure, it's really that bad..." Well, 17 hours after a nap, I'm up again. It IS that bad. Duke University held their 9th (!) Annual Academic Festival yesterday. Twenty-four (!) teams showed up from sixteen schools in seven (!) states and the District of Columbia. Following are the results, as near as I have them copied down: WASHINGTON DIVISION 1. Southside (SC) A 5-0 2. Richard Montgomery (MD) 4-1 3. Walton (GA) B 3-2 4. Decatur (GA) 2-3 5. Sci & Math (NC) 1-4 6. Hertford (NC) C 0-5 JEFFERSON DIVISION 1. Walton (GA) C 5-0 2. Richmond (NC) 4-1 3. Lexington (SC) A 3-2 4. Hertford (NC) A 2-3 5. Collegiate (PA) B 1-4 6. Cannon (NC) A 0-5 ROOSEVELT DIVISION 1. Hylton (VA) 4-1 2. Hills West (NY) 4-1 3. Duluth (GA) 4-1 4. Southside (SC) B 2-3 5. Collegiate (PA) A 1-4 6. Cannon (NC) B 0-5 LINCOLN DIVISION 1. Walton (GA) A 5-0 2. Gonzaga (DC) 4-1 3. Chapel Hill (NC) 3-2 4. Curley (MD) 2-3 5. Lexington (SC) B 1-4 6. Hertford (NC) B 0-5 Hylton, Hills West, and Duluth finished within 100 total points of each other, but in that order. Hence, that was their seeding. Also, it should be noted that in the prelims, Walton A *averaged* 400 ppg. Very few teams put that up in ONE game. The top four teams in each bracket made our expanded playoffs. Here are those results: ROUND OF 16 (W1) Southside A 400, (J4) Hertford A 75 (R2) Hills West 295, (L3) Chapel Hill 85 (W4) Decatur 240, (J1) Walton C 155 (L2) Gonzaga 285, (R3) Duluth 255 (L1) Walton A 385, (R4) Southside B 155 (J2) Richmond 295, (W3) Walton B 240 (R1) Hylton 370, (L4) Curley 80 (W2) Richard Montgomery 450, (J3) Lexington 30 QUARTERFINALS Southside A 275, Hills West 90 Gonzaga 330, Decatur 140 Walton A 350, Richmond 190 Richard Montgomery 390, Hylton 165 SEMIFINALS Southside A 245, Gonzaga 235 Walton A 325, Richard Montgomery 275 FINALS: Round 1 (max 50): Walton 30, Southside 20 Round 2 (max 300): Southside 100, Walton 95 Round 3 (max 240): Walton 100, Southside 80 Round 4 (max 200): Southside 80, Walton 60 FINAL SCORE Walton A 285, Southside A 280 I would recommend to anyone holding a national tournament that both Walton High School (Marietta, GA), who won their second straight Duke University Academic Festival, and Southside High School (Greenville, SC), who came within Sir Humphrey DavIES of winning the event, both should get invitations. Like, now. Congratulations to both teams, and both schools. Further congrats to Richmond. North Carolina's quiz bowl is currently a minor-league deal, especially compared with the big guns up north. For this team to post a 5-2 mark is impressive and worthy of congratulations. Hang in there, guys, you got a great future ahead. All in all, I'd like to thank everyone who worked their tails off all month, all week, and all night to make this tournament run without a hitch, even though four guys had pulled all-nighters to do it and a fifth would have if he weren't coming off a bout of stomach flu. As we had at the tournament, I wish to thank our seniors, Navin Sharma, Tennyson Liu, and John Massari, for helping make this program even half of what it is now. We'll see you guys soon!
