Players and Coaches -- This is just a short note to wish all of you luck at the NAQT Sectional Championships this weekend and to reiterate the policy concerning qualifications for the Intercollegiate Championship Tournament to be held this April at Washington University in St. Louis. * At each Sectional, the overall winner in Division I and the top undergraduate team (in Division I) will earn automatic berths at the ICT. In the case that the overall winner is also an undergraduate team, only one automatic berth is awarded--the highest-placing non-undergraduate team does *not* receive a bid. * The top two finishers at the 2000 British Championships will receive automatic berths in Division I. * The Division II champion will receive an automatic berth at the ICT. * Each host school will receive one automatic berth to use for either a Division I or a Division II team at the ICT. After these automatic berths are awarded, the remaining slots will be allocated on the basis of teams' statistics after attempting to correct for the differences in field strength among the regions. This determination cannot be made until all of the hosts have submitted full team statistics which is not required until 72 houts after the tournament. You should therefore look for this announcement late next week. On the basis of these statistics a waiting list will be formed and any invitations declined by teams will be offered to the teams on that list in order. Please note that though IFT performance is considered (very weakly) in the calculation of ranking statistics, there are no automatic berths awarded on the basis of winning or hosting an IFT. In addition, there is no guarantee that a Sectional's runner-up will receive an invitation (if that team is not also the undergraduate champion). Finally, teams located near St. Louis may want to consider coming to the ICT on "stand by" status. Stand-by teams will join the tournament field on a first-come, first-serve basis should there be last-minute cancellations. If there are no cancellations, stand-by teams are expected to assist with moderating and scorekeeping at the tournament and will receive free copies of the questions used and a free 2001-2002 Intramural set ($300). Past performance is no guarantee of future results, but every ICT so far has seen at least one last-minute cancellation. The Division I field at the ICT will be 36 teams and the Division II field will be 24 teams. Full information about the schedule, fees, discounts, and travel options will be posted along with the list of qualified teams. If you have any further questions about qualification, please do not hesitate to contact the NAQT ICT committee at ict_at_.... Sincerely, -- R. Robert Hentzel President and Chief Technical Officer, National Academic Quiz Tournaments, LLC
