Region 3's tournament was hosted today at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Eight teams competed this year in a round robin, with a best 2 of 3 finals. This must be the most exciting tournament I have ever been a part of. After the round robin, this was the result. Team W-L Coll. of NJ 6-1 (lost to NYU) Univ of Del 6-1 (lost to TCNJ) NYU 5-2 (lost to UD & MSU) Montclair St 4-3 Rutger-Nwrk 3-4 NJ City Univ 3-7 NJ Inst Tech 1-6 Essex C C 0-7 Finals (TCNJ vs UDel) Game 1 - The College of New Jersey jumped out to a commanding lead, and never looked back. Halftime the score was 140-45, and the final ended up 230-110. TCNJ 1-0. Game 2 - This game began exciting, with 4 lead changes in the 1st half, and a halftime score of 125-100. The second half was just exciting as TCNJ extended its lead to 50, and then UDel fighted back to take a 180-160 lead. 30 points to TCNJ bring the score to 190-180, and a UDel tossup and 5 bonus points give them a 5 point lead and a last chance at the buzzer gave TCNJ a neg five, and UDel wins it 195-185 to tie up the series. Tied 1-1. Game 3 - TCNJ again jumps out to a commanding lead in the first few minutes of 55 to (5). By halftime the lead had become a TCNJ lead of 100 to 45. UDel comes alive of in the 2nd half getting 3 of the next 4 answers, to tie the score at 110-110. A UDel tossup & bonus gives them a 20 point lead, and a TCNJ tossup & bonus (combined with a UDel neg) gives them a 25 point lead. With under a minute left, UDel pulls out a tossup, and gets a 15 point bonus to tie the game at 150-150 each, with about 10-15 seconds left! On a mineral tossup and with 5 seconds left in the game, Matt from UDel buzzes in and gets it right for the win. UDel 2 to 1! DELAWARE WINS!!! DELAWARE WINS!!!! Afterwards, there was an all-star game featuring the following players (in alphabetical order) : D. Balseiro, UDel A. Benor, NYU N. Breiner, ECC M. Cushman, UDel R. Grippaldi, TCNJ J. Gurski, TCNJ S. Harris, Rut-N P. LaVenia, UDel N. Michael, MSU J. Ruby II, NYU I personally would like to thank the staff of Region 3, this was the best overall CBI Regional tournament that I went to. I would also like the teams, all of whom were great sports today. Two teams I would especially like to mention. NYU gave us a great game and lost their two games by 5 & 10 points respectively. I would also like to thank TCNJ gave us 4 very tough matches and lost the last 2 final games by 10 points each. David Balseiro Univ of Delaware
