After seeing the comments made concerning CBI Regions 4 and 9, I felt the need to comment on Region 6. Where the aforementioned Regionals suffered from poor organization, absurd schedules, and inexperienced moderators, Tom Michael and the staff at Mississippi State put on the most professionally organized competition that I have ever experienced under some of the hardest conditions. Overcoming tornados and a lack of electricity the night before the tournament, the tournament began only five minutes late on Saturday afternoon. Despite the university president's order for all students to evacuate Starkville and return to their parents' homes a mere 20 hours before the tournament, all seven rooms were staffed with two game officials in addition to a moderator. The moderators for the tournament included several who had over 10 years experience with the game as well as former players - there was not a bad moderator at the tournament. Most rounds got through 22-25 tossups in two 8 minute halves. The competition was top-notch, as 15 teams battled through a full round robin for the two spots in a best 2 of 3 playoff - exactly the format used at CBI Nationals. The few protests that arose were handled quickly and professionally. As a unexpected bonus, the school provided free snacks and sodas throughout the tournament and an awards banquet in the football stadium luxury box with a delicious selection of grilled chicken and roast beef. My thanks to Tournament Director Tom Michael and his entire staff for putting on such a tournament despite all odds. -Daniel Nordby Communications Director, UF College Bowl
