I swear, if this window crashes ONE MORE TIME... ugh. Sorry for the lateness factor. MIDWEST (1) Michigan 530, (16) Lamar 5 David Thorsley thrills the home-province crowd, which has arrived to see Canada's greatest active player in action. He does not disappoint, putting up 1/1/0 in the second half. (8) Virginia Tech 200, (9) Bowling Green 185 Proving that the selection committee isn't entirely stupid, this game plays close the entire way, with no one leading by more than 50 points at any time. The final result comes when Bowling Green can't convert a very difficult bonus (even VT expresses sympathies) and runs out of time and luck. (4) Penn 240, (13) Illinois-Chicago 110 Unfortunately, I know nothing about this game, as the stats have mysteriously disappeared. Oh well; I'm sure I'll get around to finding them sometime. (5) Maryland 250, (12) Chattanooga 125 Sentimental favorite UTC cannot pull off the upset against the Terps. Shaun Hayeslip comments that they should beat Penn in round 2 and go to the Sweet 16 "unless the NCAA feels there's some reason we shouldn't be". (6) Georgia 245, (11) Delaware 125 David Balseiro fires up the troops here. Halftime has Delaware up 125-60, but that's it for the offense. Georgia shuts them down and wonders how they only got a 6. (3) Stanford 340, (14) Valparaiso 75 Valpo wilts under the pressure from just the Stanford Division II squad. Stanford/Georgia is already hyped by Tom Chuck as "the potential match of the tournament, babee! It'll be AWEsome!" He is then muzzled before his Dick Vitale impression can continue. (7) Cornell 220, (10) Michigan State 180 Jason Keller vs. Chris Galeckza winds up being the de facto matchup here. Keller pulls the last tossup for the victory. (2) Texas 340, (15) Portland 45 Jennifer Hopens gets things off to a good start by outscoring the Pilots by herself. The crowd approves of Texas's performance overall. SOUTH (1) Virginia 395, (16) High Point 10 John Kenney gets the ball rolling with back-to-back powers to open. It's all downhill from there for High Point as the Wahoos roll. (8) Florida Atlantic 230, (9) Washington 170 Hardly this close, Raj Dhuwalia took it easy down the stretch. Dhuwalia states in a post-game interview that he hopes to play Virginia well and prove "we're better than an 8." (4) Wisconsin 290, (13) Utah 90 Utah plays evenly on tossups, but lack of depth of knowledge kills them on bonuses as the Badgers get a surprisingly big win. (5) Arkansas 245, (12) South Florida 135 In a difficult hardcore match, the Wehrmans pull out a victory over their counterparts from the deep south. The Bulls vow to be back and better next year. (11) Iowa State 220, (6) Minnesota 210, OT In the crucial overtime, Iowa State catches Minnesota napping on the tiebreaker tossup, procuring the biggest upset of the first round. (3) Florida 285, (14) Tennessee Tech 85 Surprisingly closer than their SCT matchup, Florida finally puts away a pesky TTU team and hopes to avoid a Cyclone upset in Round 2. (10) Boston University 200, (7) Oregon 175 Erik Nielsen surprises the Ducks with a commanding solo performance, and Terrier teammate Jon Couture adds his two buzzes to help with the victory. (2) Harvard 400, (15) Southern 25 As expected, Harvard steamrolls Southern, but appreciates the halftime show. David Farris mentions how it'll be nice to have "a familiar foe staring across the table at us" in the second round match.
