Good topic choice, Steven. I was interested in
this very topic in the past, and even posted an
ultimate singles tourney idea of the 16 best players I had
seen play.
As for who is out there now, there
are no Tom Waterses or Andrew Yaphes or John Sheahans
or Jim Dendys anymore. But there are a number of
players on that first "Subash" tier (with those three
above residing on the zeroth tier). I'll stick to the
Mid-Atlantic, which I have seen recently in person: Jeff Hoppes
and Jacob Mikanowski of Princeton; Matt Weiner of
Pittsburgh; John Kenney of Virginia. All undergrads, btw
(interestingly enough), Matt and Jacob are
freshmen.

P.S. Who knows who is an elite at
Michigan? I mean, there are a lot of PTPers whose PPG gets
held down by the shadow effect -- that team may have
about 8-10 first-tier players...
