BHI 3, a high school tournament at the University of Delaware, was held yesterday. When I left, the last four were Charter A, Archmere A, Council Rock A, and Warwick B. Observations 1. One small suggestion - the playoffs used single-elim quarterfinals, which resulted in Council Rock A and B playing each other in the first round. The easiest way to resolve this appears to be by running quarterfinals as A1vB2, D1vC2, C1vD2, and B1vA2 and placing the two teams from one school in the A and C brackets or the B and D brackets - if you do this, teams from the same school are guaranteed not to meet until the semis, and two teams that win their brackets can't meet until the finals. Not that I really minded - Council Rock A made a furious comeback that tied the game on the last question, then couldn't get any points on the bonus. They then got the second tossup in overtime - since Rock B got no tossups in OT, even a neg five by Rock A on the third tossup couldn't keep them from advancing. One of the better games I've seen/moderated. 2. Delaware schools seemed to have made a quantum leap forward in the past few years - Charter and Archmere are (obviously) particularly good, and their alums should make a lot of college programs happy. More encouraging, however, was the fact that a lot of the mid-level teams seem to have improved their level of play as well. 3. I said this last year, but congrats to UD's team for running a tournament that has grown from twelve teams to fourteen to twenty-nine with few logistical problems.
