Okay, I'm not quite sure that I understand why the teams can't play each other. All I know is that out here in Claremont, there are two key quiz bowl teams: Scripps and Harvey Mudd. But you would never know that we were two teams, judging from our practices. We do have two practices a week (one held at Scripps, one held at HMC), but that's about as much distinguishing as one can do. People from other schools in our neck of the woods will tell you that we play together as a "Scrudd" team more often than we play separately. My question is: if there is a Scripps team and an HMC team at a tourney, should we expect not to play each other in a single-elim playoff? Considering that I consider us one team (and we'll actually be merging next year...if you'd like more info on why this is legal, contact me), why are we always treated as two (just because of our names)? Is it because we're college teams and that the general treatment of high school teams is nicer? I think it's great fun to play the "other" team, myself. The team that loses hangs out and cheers for the team that wins. You all go home, if you're of age you play drinking Trivial Pursuit or Balderdash, you watch a stupid movie, discuss the tournament, and go to bed. I understand everyone's reasons as to why one may think that this situation (of teams from the same school facing each other in single-elim playoffs)is not optimal. However, I don't think that the sentiment is so overwhelming that we need to change schedules over it. Nancy
