Mike (Wehrman) and I both attended the ACE quizbowl camp then held at Wofford College in South Carolina. Mike went in '94 and 95' (before his sophomore and junior years), and I went in '95, '96, and '97. Our coach, Larry Allen at North Kansas City, has brought teams down for the past 7 years, and we agree that it helps young players get used to playing, and lets them see the game played at a high level by top high school programs. I'm not sure exactly the format of the camp now, but when I was there, it was five days long. The first night everyone takes a placement test. This test of 100 questions with various subjects and difficulties places the player into a practice room for the next day. In the morning the campers practice for a couple hours in their assigned rooms. The top few get to move up into a more competitive room, and the bottom ones move down. Each player picks a category of study for the duration of the camp (history, science, or lit), and every afternoon, he/she does worksheets, looks over lists, that sort of thing. On the last day there is a shootout style tournament among players of each subject. The camp is angled more towards younger players, as few elite seniors attend. Young players need to hear questions before they are able to write them.
