Wow, somebody remembers Klein's exploits :) I think it's impossible, or at least incredibly difficult, to name a "best high school team" in the country. Different formats are favored in different states, and any given high school (at least, any given public high school) is at the mercy of their school district as to which nationals they are able to attend. Panasonic gets points with me for at least soliciting teams from every state - we felt very honored to be able to participate in that particular tournament. However, the tournament format is unquestionably screwy and unpredictable, and it's definitely not the best way to determine the national champion. Being a single-school team at Panasonic had its pros and cons. Texas has always sent the top school, as opposed to a team of all stars, and its disproportionately dismal history at Panasonic may well reflect this. However, the fact that the Klein team had been playing together for 2 years definitely contributed to our win; teams of all-stars who knew each other less well seemed to step on each other's toes in the finals, a problem we didn't encounter. So, as honored as I am by your kind words, there is another side to the "enormous disadvantage" of being a single-school team. suzy klein high school c/o '98 :)
