Berkeley will be hosting its High School Tournament on Sunday. Listening to some of the questions we will be using gave me an idea. It stems from the issue of what to do in the event that one part of a bonus seems a little too hard for High School, but is interesting, worth asking, and gettable for someone with a particular interest in the field. My sense is that in most cases this bonus part is usually purged and the bonus is made two parts for fifteen points each. I suggest another way. I think that we should leave in very hard bonus parts and just adjust their point value. This form of bonus would be called a 15-14-1 bonus. The two remaining parts account for 29 points while the more challenging part accounts for just 1. This will allow more college level questions to remain in High School rounds without having too great an effect on the outcome of games. It will further give Bay Area high school kids a feel for what a challenging college level question is like, which doesn't frequently happen in the course of our High School tournaments. Naturally many have called my innovation insane. I say, the more variety the better. What do you think? Steve
