PARTNERSHIP FOR ACADEMIC COMPETITION EXCELLENCE 2001 Benjamin Cooper Memorial Quiz Bowl Ambassador Award The Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE) has decided to award the Benjamin Cooper Memorial Quiz Bowl Ambassador Award for 2001 to ROBERT C. GRIERSON for his service as coach of the scholastic bowl team of the Latin School of Chicago, the treasurer to the Illinois High School Scholastic Bowl Coaches Association (IHSSCBA) and in particular as founder and editor for "Scholastic Visions", the official newsletter for the IHSSBCA. Due to Mr. Grierson's efforts with the newsletter, Scholastic Visions has increased the visibility of academic quiz competitions in the state of Illinois and beyond. Articles written by coaches across the state of Illinois advise teams on the schedule of competitions in Illinois, experiences with national tournaments, competition organizational tips, and announcements from the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Scholastic Bowl Advisory Committee. As a result, the newsletter provides a perspective and a voice to network Illinois coaches with others in their state as well as organizations in other parts of the country. Currently a self-employed mathematics and technology consultant for Lapin Systems (Evanston, Illinois) and the William K. Bradford Company (Acton, Massachusetts), Mr. Grierson was an educator for 19 years, the last 17 of which were under the employment of the Latin School of Chicago, where he also served as the team's scholastic bowl advisor until 1997. In 1998, the Latin School won the Scholastic Bowl state championship in its division the following year and competed at the 1998 PACE National Scholastics Championship. An alumnus of Northwestern University, Mr. Grierson has been commended as an outstanding education, receiving the 1993 Shipp Outstanding Educator Award by the Latin School of Chicago and was a finalist (1995) for the Illinois Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching. Mr. Grierson also has been recognized by the community for his service to the Latin School (1991 Augustus K. Maxwell Award) and to the youths of Evanston, Illinois (1991 William E. Harper Award). PACE expresses its recognition and appreciation for Mr. Grierson's contributions and service to the high school academic competition community by conferring the Benjamin Cooper Memorial Quiz Bowl Ambassador Award at the 2001 PACE National Scholastics Championship on June 16-17, 2001, at Bowling Green State University (Ohio).
