Twenty-two teams competed at the 2001 PACE National Scholastics Championship, held at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH, 16-17 June 2001. [For those of you who were there, I apologize for my absence Saturday morning; Mother Nature and US Airways conspired to strand me in Pittsburgh from about 5 PM Friday to shortly after noon on Saturday.] After seven preliminary rounds, the top twelve teams advanced to a five-round quarterfinal round robin. After the quarterfinals, the top two teams in each bracket advanced to the semifinals, where Georgetown Day School (Washington, DC, 5-0 in QF) defeated Detroit Country Day School (Beverly Hills, MI, 4-1), and State College Area HS A (State College, PA, 4-1) defeated Detroit Catholic Central HS (Redford, MI, 5-0). In the finals, State College A defeated Georgetown Day School to capture their fourth consecutive NSC title. All four schools, by qualifying for the semifinals, have earned automatic bids to the 2002 NSC, scheduled for 15-16 June 2002 at George Washington University in Washington, DC. In addition, the following quarterfinalist teams have earned at-large bids to the 2002 NSC: Governor's School for Government & International Studies (Richmond, VA) Maret HS (Washington, DC) Plymouth Canton Educational Park (Canton, MI) Russellville HS (Russellville, AL) Adlai Stevenson HS (Lincolnshire, IL) Troy HS (Troy, MI) Woodward Academy (College Park, GA) [State College B also made the quarterfinals, but PACE rules stipulate that a school may not earn an automatic bid and an at-large bid at the same tournament. Also, an exhibition team, Team Illinois, competed, although they were ineligible for the championship; they went 5-2 in preliminary play, and later defeated Detroit Country Day School in an exhibition match.] More detailed results will soon be posted at http://www.pace-nsc.org . Congratulations to the above teams. --Samer Ismail President, Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence
