First off, let me just say (before anyone else does) that I am thrilled that DC won Panasonic. Mr. Tyson is a wonderful coach who has been the heart and soul of the Benjamin Banneker HS program for years. Due to his efforts, there is more to the DC *city* academic program than just the TV show. This honor has been a long time coming, and I urge those of you who know him still to send along your congratulations. Sometimes, the right man does win after all. Anyway, in tournament news, I am in the process of writing FOIST (Fred Ottman Individual Summer Tournament) as we speak. I am done with the sports and music questions, and can give you a heads up on them. Sports will be divided into ten categories: Football, baseball, pro hoops, NHL, soccer, golf, tennis, college hoops, Olympics, games. Please note that these categories are all-encompassing: Football includes pro and college, Baseball includes major and minor, Olympics includes summer and winter, tennis includes men's and women's, etc. Each category takes up 10%, and this section is 20% of the tournament. Music will cover, well, music. The main focus of my music questions is the Rock and Roll era. The distribution focuses is divided into three parts, in fact: 60s music, 90s+ music, and Other music, in a ratio of 31%, 36%, and 32%. Clues will be based on everything connected to music, including in some cases the backstage dealings of a musical talent. Be forewarned: for hits released during the MTV era, the music video is just as important to the selling of a hit as the song itself, so clues are included on it. In other words, if you're gonna study, you can do worse than watch VH1 at night. As with sports, music is 20% of the tournament. I can also tell you right now that 20% of the questions will be on movies (all sorts) and 20% on TV (all sorts), and in each case I will specifically devote 10% to the sci-fi genre for all you geeks out there. The remaining 20% will be devoted to the Miscellaneous, things that just don't fit a nice category. Two-sport stars go here. Crossover acts (such as Shaq's rap career) go here. Children's literature (and I'm not talkin' Newbery Award material) goes here. Comic strip/book trivia goes here. And, yes, pro wrestling goes here. Before anyone asks, I will limit myself to 10% of the category on it. So there. Well, now that I've published Part 1 of my distribution, if anyone wants to sign up/out of FOIST, tell Edmund (ers_at_... or trivia_at_...) and he'll be happy to handle the details. DON'T EMAIL ME. If you do, I will be forced to laugh at your email in the same manner that Vincent Price laughs at the end of Thriller. Andy Goss Author, Director, blah blah blah F.O.I.S.T. ps -- I believe this is the first ever trash singles event. If I'm wrong, let me know. If I'm right, pause to think about the fact that I'm writing the first ever. Shudder. Then move on.
