As previously announced, UTC will host its first academic masters tournament, Moc Masters, on Saturday, August 11, 2001. Barring a sudden surge of question-writing time on my part, this will be a mirror of the Antonin Arnaud, held the same weekend at Michigan. ELIGIBILITY: The tournament is open to all sentient beings capable of pressing a buzzer, regardless of age, academic affiliation, grade level or experience. Teams are composed of up to 4 players. For those wishing to join a team as free agents, or teams wishing to add another player, I will send out matchmaking information at some point. FORMAT: We'll use untimed rounds of 20 tossups (worth 10 pts. each) and up to 20 bonuses (worth a possible 30 pts. each.) SCHEDULE: It's yet another Saturday-only tournament. Registration will begin at 9:00 EST and the tournament will begin at 10. I'll have a better idea of when it will end when I have a better idea of the size of the field, but based on prior experience, expect it to end around 8:30 or 9 PM. FEES: Base fee $95 per team of 4 players Discounts: - $10 for a working lockout buzzer system - $10 for each empty chair on the team (i.e., a one-person team without a buzzer would be charged $65) - $10 for a moderator supplied for either Moc Masters and/or Muck Masters (the trash tournament on Sun. 8/12 -- details to follow) - $20 for submitting a blind round for Muck Masters (obviously, available to non-Muck Masters participants only) LOCATION: Tournament headquarters will probably once again be 129 Grote Hall, but we can't confirm this yet because the UTC committee that formally approves the paperwork only meets once a month in the summer. If it's not Grote 129, we'll know before the end of July and will pass along the correction. Matches will take place in Grote and Holt Halls on the UT-Chattanooga campus. LODGINGS: I have not yet arranged for a hotel discount anywhere, but if enough people express an interest I'll go shopping for one. DIRECTIONS: From Atlanta or Knoxville -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I-24 west towards downtown. Once in town follow the freeway splitoff for U.S. 27 N./Downtown. From 27 N. take the 4th St. exit, within sight of the Tennessee Aquarium. Go right on 4th St. (you have no choice) and follow it for ca. 1 mile. When you reach the UTC Arena, turn right on Mabel St. Mabel St. goes around a curve and becomes E. 5th St. Shortly thereafter, across from a cemetery, you'll reach Holt Hall. Just past Holt Hall turn right to enter the parking lot. Grote is the other building adjoining that lot. * From Nashville and points west/north: Take I-24 east to Chattanooga. As you round Moccasin Bend (freeway goes alongside river) watch for two exit lanes on the right; take the less rightward of the two, which will have signs above it for U.S. 27 N. Rest of directions are the same as above. * From Birmingham and points southwest: Take I-59 to the outskirts of Chattanooga, where it dead-ends into I-24. Get on I-24 East and follow the Nashville directions from there. CONTACT: Tournament director is of course Charlie Steinhice, coach of UTC's quizbowl team. I can be reached by e-mail. Sometime this month, if I can get my friggin' DSL modem to work, I will be switching my e-mail from the current account (charlies_at_...) to steinhic_at_..., but I plan to keep the vol.com account active till the tournament's over. I can also be reached by phone at 423-763-7147 (office) / 423-877-2706 (home), or by mail at 1185 Mtn.Creek Rd. #1801, Chattanooga, TN 37405.
