As with Matt, I figure now's as good a time as any to post the final group for FOIST, the Fred Ottman Individual Summer Tournament. We have had 9 changes in the past 48 hours, so get yer scorecards out, cuz here we go... - Jason Keller has dropped out of FOIST, and for that matter the whole Pentathlon, due to a torn ACL. (Man, that quizbowl's a dangerous sport...). We at the Pentathlon staff wish him a speedy recovery and are sorry he cannot join us. - Josh Levit, who apparently isn't suffering from any injury, has also decided to reverse field and not play FOIST. - Meanwhile, seven people have decided to play, most of whom were probably intending anyway (at least one of them said, "Oh, I must've forgotten to sign up, sorry."). They are Dwight Kidder, Anthony de Jesus, Joe Wirzburger, Matt Weiner, David Hayes, James McGhee, and Michael Roke. So... The field as it stands right now, 10:45 AM EDT, is: P. Castagna C. Clavenger A. de Jesus J. Dinan T. Edwards A. Fine A. Fleming B. Gross D. Hayes D. Kidder M. Lafer J. McGhee J. Nam J. Needle A. Neuhaus E. Nielsen R. Paul R. Paul's fiance (anonymous) S. Perry M. Philpy C. Rantz M. Roke E. Schluessel T. Stratton S. Walker M. Weiner J. Wirzburger L. Wolpert This is a field of 28. I know that I said it would stop at 25. I lied. However, "if my memory serves me correctly", there are a few maybes in this list. At any rate, my scheduling idea is radically different whether 27 or 28. Yeah, I know, it WOULD be. For now, assuming all 28 play, here's the schedule: ROUND 1: You will be thrown into four groups of seven. 60 questions, one screw. ROUND 2: Players will shift as necessary via predetermined assignment. In each room will be someone who finished first, second,... sixth, seventh. 60 questions, one screw (not cumulative). ROUND 3: Here's where things get interesting. The rooms will no longer be 7-7-7-7, but 4-8-8-8. All first place finishers in one room, all 2nd/3rd place finishers in another, all 4th/5th place finishers in another, all 6th/7th place finishers in the other. 60 questions, one screw (still not cumulative). FUDGE ROUND: In each of three rooms there will be four players. The players assigned 3-6, 11-14, and 19-22 will meet in a quick round to make sure they all were in the right order. 20 questions, one screw (and only one). DOUBLE ELIM: Each match is 20 questions. Once you are eliminated, you play the next match against those people who were also eliminated in that round for final placement. This will take 7 or 8 rounds and may or may not involve screwing, depending on the will of the players. Prizes have been picked out for the top 5 finishers. They are loosely related to the title of the event. Don't let anyone in on the secret if you know. And with that, I'll see y'all later today, I hope. Andy Goss Author/Director, FOIST
