NE TRASH REGIONALS Boston University November 10, 2001 As hard as it may be to believe, Boston University is hosting the TRASH NE Regional tournament. Please contain your surprise. As in past years, the event will be held in the centrally-located College of Arts and Sciences building, located at 685 Commonwealth Avenue. WHO CAN PLAY? Teams are welcome from the following locations: * New England * the Northeast US, including New York, New Jersey, and other type areas. * the Canadian Maritimes, Quebec, and Ontario * Nebraska * anywhere else that could be, in some way shape or form, considered to be covered by the designator "NE" WHAT'S THE FORMAT? Teams will play some form of round-robin tournament. It may be straight, double, or modified, depending on number of teams. We will shoot for a minimum of 12 games for each team. Format is still under discussion. Past formats included a 3 period, 7 questions per period game, and the standard two 10 question halves. We've also used modified CBA and NASL scoring systems for standings. Perhaps we'll go nuts and use a _really_ modified Stableford system. We'll see what we can cook up. Teams get one lame per round. At this point, no word on if we'll adopt bonus saving, the "bonus challenge" that seemed to cause all sorts of confusion when we used it in '97 (which you think would argue against its use, but perhaps folks are more trash-savvy now), or something else. We may return to ripping of Michigan's "get out of -5 free" card, if we remember to make them this time. OK, HOW MUCH IS THIS GOING TO RUN US? First team: $75 Second team: $60 Third team and on: $50 Buzzer system: -$10 Game official: -$10 Distance discount: -$10 per player from at least 150 miles away Clock: +$10 (we're untimed, people!) Teams from Nebraska and all non-US locations: FREE! Minimum fee (for teams not playing gratis, as noted above): $30/team SO WHO'S GOING TO BE AT THIS THING? Good question. Schools that played in the past include MIT, Harvard, Dartmouth, Williams, NYU, BC, and Brandeis (and others, probably). We also get the odd master's team. In some cases, we also get the incredibly odd master's team, but the less said about Chris Rosenberg the better. WHAT ARE WE PLAYING FOR? The teams competing at the NE TRASH Regional are playing for many things. Pride, for example. They're also playing for what can charitably be called an eclectic treasure trove of prizes. In the past, this meant trash cans, toilet plungers, bad books, and the occasional shoe that may or may not be nailed to a board. This year, the Christmas Tree Shops have been an unwitting accomplice in prize-getting. Be forewarned. More importantly, teams are playing for automatic bids (and standing for wild card bids) to TRASHionals, the grand championship tournament for TRASH. TRASHionals 2002 will be from April 12-14 at a site to be determined. ALL RIGHT, YOU SOLD ME. HOW DO I GET THERE? Directions to the Charles River Campus are available at: http://www.bu.edu/admissions/visit/campus/directns.html At this point, aim to be here at 9 AM (at the specific location TBA). SO WHO DO I TELL THAT I WANT TO PLAY? Please send all inquiries to qbowl_at_.... Co-tournament directors Mark Coen and Ellen Rosoff will reply so you know you're in and send future mailings as we get closer to the date. ANYTHING ELSE? Nope. Thanks for reading. Register for the NE TRASH Regional early and often!
