Hi, all. CARDINAL CLASSIC XII: Beware the Esker will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2002 at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. CARDINAL CLASSIC XII, as usual, will be a timed, packet-submission tournament featuring questions approximating the difficulty of NAQT Sectionals/ACF Fall. CCXII will be an open tournament eligible to all teams regardless of composition. CCXII will also feature recognition of the best division II team (i.e. teams composed entirely of 1st- and 2nd-year players). The following discounts/penalties are applicable to CCXII: Base Fee $100 No charge for non-CA teams -$5 per working buzzer set -$10 per competent game official -$20 if packet received by Dec. 15, 2001 -$10 if packet received by Jan. 2, 2002 No penalty if packet received by Jan. 17, 2002 +$10 if packet received by Jan. 24, 2002 +$20 if packet received after Jan. 24, 2002 Minimum Fee $60 Each team is required to submit a packet of 30 toss-ups and 30 bonuses. As this is a timed tournament, please make sure your toss-ups are no more than 4-5 lines of text (12 point Times New Roman or equivalents). Also, please restrict your bonus lead-ins to 1 line and each bonus part to 2 lines. There should be no five- or six-prompt bonuses and maybe 1 four-prompt bonus per round. Despite the fact that the questions must be on the short side, there is still plenty of room for lots of clues. Please saturate your questions with as much information as possible and leave out bullshit like This novel, noted for its use of symbolism and imagery, is thought of by critics the world over as being a good read. As this tournament will be on the easy side, please make all your questions answerable by the lowest common denominator. Your knowledge of 20th century Mongolian dictators or sub-Saharan philosophers will not impress me, but your ability to write an excellent toss-up on Andrew Jackson or Richard Wagner will. Please adhere to the following distribution when writing your packet, while varying each category as much as possible (e.g. science should include physics, chemistry, biology, et al.): Literature 6/6 Science 6/6 History 6/6 Social Science 3/3 Fine Arts 3/3 RMP 3/3 Sports/Trash/Current Events 3/3 If you feel you are unable to complete a packet, please contact me and we may be able to work something out. Im generally pretty flexible on these things if theres good reason. Also, I would be happy to accept freelance packets in exchange for a set of the questions. Finally, many teams and individuals from across the country have already expressed interest in attending CARDINAL CLASSIC XII: Beware the Esker, so it should prove to be a diverse and exciting field. I would highly encourage teams everywhere to come to this tournament for just one reason: its in California, and California is better than wherever you are right now. If youd like to register for this premier event, or if you have any questions, please contact me at rsbhan_at_.... Looking forward to seeing you all in February. Roger Bhan CCXII TD and Editor
