However, as I was going to finish before the "return key" ended up posting my message, there are other reasons for having a worksheet round, like: 1. moderator incompetence...while this is a legit complaint, i look at it in the same vain i look at bad officials in sports. The problem isn't in the lightning round, it's in its execution. I think the problem can be solved at its root. 2. long math questions...i'm a bit biased here, because i'm a math person, but i think NAQT does a fine job testing computational math skills in regular tossups. Granted, it's kind of hard to write good ones, but can't the same be said for all types of questions? Generally, a greater familiarity with math concepts, and more importantly, a greater familiarity with numbers and operations leads to quicker buzzing in. You said something to the effect of "shouldn't qb reflect what the kids know?", and to that, I say...sort of. Only to the extent that a tennis match should reflect the combination of skill and atheticism. Quizbowl is a game just like tennis is, and I think that the game is enhanced by things like rivalries and controversy and upsets and even bad calls. In this same vain, i think that buzzer speed is a crucial part of the game "quizbowl" and that eliminating it creates an entirely different game. ---Amber, DCDS (who might be coming to Buzzerpalooza...)
