Congratulations to Tim Young, who becomes the 5th different winner in 5 years of K-Tel Hell. Tim received a copy of a K-Tel album on vinyl and had the K-Tel Hell Championship Belt bestowed upon him by dethroned Hellion Chris Hendry. K-Tel Hell followed the same format as in previous years, but there were two notable changes. First of all, the '90's were slipped into the mix for the first time. Second, this year was all-new material; I had gone back through the first four years and logged the songs I'd used so I could make sure. The preliminary round consisted of 25 songs, and contestants wrote their answers on an entry form with the top 10 scorers to advance to the finals. In a ferociously competitive field, we had a three-way tie for 10th and had to scare up a "Gordian knot" buzzer system. Finalists with scores (out of a possible 125 points) were: Chris Walker, 107 Chris Hendry, 106 Dennis Thibodeaux, 101 Rob Barzegar and Tim Young, 99 each Greg Sorenson, 94 Mark Dawson, 91 James Dinan, 90 James Quintong, 89 Vic D'Amico, Keith Hudson, and Matt Levine, 87 [Keith Hudson thus kept alive a streak -- he's made the finals of K-Tel Hell all 5 years.] And the finals -- Lord, those folks were fast. The top scorer in the prelims, Chris Walker, only got 5 points in the finals -- and he got those by correctly identifying Peter Frampton's "Show Me the Way" from the introductory applause. No, really. The outcome was still in doubt till the 25th and final question, but the final scores were: Tim Young 20 James Quintong 17 Mark Dawson 15 Chris Hendry, Mark Levine 12 _at_ Chris Walker, Dennis Thibodeaux, Greg Sorenson, Vic D'Amico 5 _at_ Keith Hudson, James Dinan 3 _at_ Rob Barzegar 0 Thanks to Samer Ismail, Kevin Olmstead, Edmund Schluessel, and Vera Lawson for their assistance with K-Tel Hell logistics.
