Davis Popular Culture Tournament was held on the Central Campus of the University of Michigan on the 20th of January, 2002. 75% Gerbil Free featuring Greg Sorenson, James Quintong, Dwight Kidder and Anne Mitchell defeated The Attack of the Clones of Dr. Funkenstein featuring Jeremy White, Jason Schwengler, Keith Hudson and Brian Hight in a thrilling final game 266-255. The final packet featured the usual bag of tricks, including the already legendary ?Where?s Waldo?? tossup and lunch snack tasting. Eighteen teams made their way for the tournament with the squads split into two pools of nine. After the initial round robin, the top three teams went into the championship pool, the middle three teams to a consolation pool and the bottom three teams to a kiddie pool. Three additional games were played to complete the round robin, with the top two teams playing in a one-game, winner-take-all final. For the other pools, the best record was considered the winner, with The Moe Szyslak Trio Featuring Homer (Michigan undergrads) taking the Sheraton pool and Defending Linneaus Manhood (Chicago players) taking the Motel 6 pool. I would like to thank Kevin Olmstead, Doug O?Brien, Alexis Mansfield, Zac from Northwestern, Lindsay from Iowa State, Mark Calaguas, Paul Litvak, Zeke Berdichevsky and Ben Heller for reading; all of the Michigan people and all of the non-Michigan people for helping out with various little things throughout the day and all of the players for making this tournament what is has become today. For those of you who were not there, I had an extremely sore throat and I appreciate the fact that the amount of reading I had to do was kept to a minimum. Mark your calendars: 19 January 2003 -- The Sloop Ann B. Davis Popular Culture Tournament! --Mike Burger
