In an effort to postpone assembling a job talk, I began reading the quizbowl group. I clicked on a message about today's ACF tournament, which brought up another list of messages about ACF philosophy, and why it's good, and why it's bad. Here we go again, I thought, until I realized I was somehow reading messages from _1999_. I tried to click on other new messages, but always got back to the same list from years gone by. So whether or not the annual debate over whether ACF is good or evil actually starts, some evil demon made sure I was exposed to one at the appropriate time of year. Creepy. That said, I didn't go to ACF this year (despite the fact that it was in nearby Irvine). To quell speculation, this was not because I hate it, and not because attending ACF would be "making the supreme sacrifice" (in fact, Caltech has moved this phrase to the Graveyard of Outdated Jargon*), but because I had previous plans. I hope everyone else had a good time at the tournament. And just remember, when you all start whining about Sumerian love poetry, or defending it as worthy knowledge, you can copy and paste choice phrases from the 1999 discussion and save yourself some effort! :) Maribeth Mason *http://www.its.caltech.edu/~quizbowl/oldjargon.html
