NOTE: This message was originally sent last week to a set of all the regional contacts I could find, and now, this invitational is officially open to the general public. Johns Hopkins University CB is pleased to announce that it will hold the Popular Culture Undertaking (PCU), a trash tournament, on Sunday, April 21, 2002. No packet submission is necessary, as all of the questions will be written in-house (in fact, we have written about one third of the questions already). Mike DeSantis will serve as Tournament Director, while I will be the Internal Question Editor-in-Chief. Here are the fees: $80 BASE FEE -10 per competent moderator (max 2 per team) -10 per working buzzer system -20 if travelling more than 200 miles -10 if you also attend ACF Nationals the day before MINIMUM FEE (not including SUADs): $40 Special Unrealistic Accompaniment Discounts (SUADs): -40 if you bring one of the top ten billed cast members from the movie "PCU" -60 if you bring any regular cast member, past or present, from "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" -100 Fine-DeSantis Blue Plate Special (if you bring a Playboy Playmate, Playboy Cyber Girl, Victoria's Secret supermodel, Yamila Diaz-Rahi, or Katherine Heigl :)) Rules: -Untimed, 20-toss-up games -Laming will be in effect; each team will get one per round, and the captain must signal intention to lame after the moderator finishes reading the first bonus part. -Special Rule: unlike English class, we will have a "Double/Negative" Rule. Once per round, just like the lame, by the end of the first bonus part the captain of each team can call out "Double/Negative." On that bonus, the team will earn double points for every bonus part they get correct... but will _lose_ the point value from their score if they get a bonus part incorrect. On 30-20-10s, you lose only 10 points at a time. Numerically, here is the point conversion chart: Regular Total Bonus Points Double/Negative Total Bonus Points 30 60 25 45 20 30 15 15 10 0 5 -15 1 -28 0 -30 So there is a risk involved: you need to earn 15 points on the bonus to break even, but can reap a large reward for doing well on the bonus. Field size will be capped at 18 teams; this is our logistical limit so that we can hold the whole tournament in one building. Every team will be guaranteed 10 games, and most likely 11. We plan to run between 11 and 13 rounds. If your team would like to register, please send an e-mail to Mike DeSantis (mikeyd_at_...), indicating the number of teams you wish to bring, moderators, and buzzers. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing you in April! -Adam Fine (Geertgen22_at_...)
