Funny -- I thought every game I played last Saturday afternoon was
relevant.
Tournaments in the past have had problems with single elimination in
that one poorly written packet can eliminate all the top teams of the
tournament at once.
Swiss pairing and playoff pools allow multiple opportunities in part
to minimize that effect, and in part to give teams the opportunity to
play against teams of similar caliber. People don't travel a long
way to stomp or be stomped; these formats allow teams the most
chances to play against the opponents they're most likely to enjoy
playing against.
As for the argument that single elim makes quizbowl exciting: nothing
makes quizbowl exciting. :)
