Hey everyone out there in QB land, we need your help. Two different ways, even. For something that really matters. Many of you know Dave Leach, former Oglethorpe QBer and one of the most popular moderators at tournaments here at UTC and in the Atlanta area. Early this year Dave's right arm broke unexpectedly, and it turned out the cause was bone loss from an aggressive lymphoma. Dave fought back, cheerfully of course, and is winning the fight. He finished chemo recently and started radiation treatments this week. Although there are some questions about the use of his arm in the future, the overall prognosis is now good. Like many in the computer industry, Dave had been laid off late last year, so he and his lovely bride/scorekeeper September didn't have health insurance when this hit. (And as you might guess, chemo has kind of gotten in the way of his job search.) To help them with their medical bills, some of us in Southeastern quizbowl are launching a fundraiser that will do everyone some good. We are soliciting contributions of tossups for a massive set of practice questions (hats off to Eric Douglass of South Carolina for being the first to contribute.) Our objective is to gather at least 1,000 original tossups suitable for practice at the high school or college level. We'll take trash too and treat that as a separate section. I'll edit and assemble. We're also soliciting purchasers for those questions at $50 per set -- $50 for a minimum of fifty rounds sounds reasonable even if it wasn;t for such a worthy cause. We plan to set up a separate account for these orders, but if you want to go ahead and get your order in on this academic year's budget and need to put in a requisition now, for the time being you can make checks payable to UTC Academic Trivia Association. E-mail me at steinhic_at_... if you need more info or wish to pledge questions and/or money. Thanks, everyone, for whatever help you can provide.
