The main problem with high school packet submission is very few teams would be willing to write packets to go to a tournament. The vast majority of college students are willing to write packets as a condition for playing in a tournament. However, college students are more likely to play quizbowl for love of the game, rather than the resume-building more present in some high school students. In this day and age, high school players know more than ever and some schools travel hundreds of miles on a monthly basis to attend tournaments (for example, Detroit Catholic Central), but I doubt high school packet submission tournaments will ever become practical. My school's club generally attracts 50 to 60 teams to their high school tournaments. Require packet submissions, and the number of teams would likely drop to five or worse. Seeing as high school tournaments are used mainly as a fundraiser to attend collegiate tournaments, requiring teams to write would destroy our revenue streams. It is so much more profitable to spend tens of hours writing packets ourselves; the time expended pays off, literally. Daniel Greenstein MAQT
