For those of you who are sitting on the fence waiting for more information on the Lewis Grizzard Treasure Tournament in regards to hotel, food etc., here is all the info you'll ever need... Travel Information for Athens, Georgia and the Lewis Grizzard Memorial Treasure Tournament LODGING: The official hotel for the tournament is the Athens Holiday Inn. As per an agreement with the hotel, we have 24 rooms on reserved at a rate of $89 a night. **NOTE: These rooms, which normally go for $102 a night, are rooms the hotel normally reserves for special University guests, so you know they are good rooms. Plus, we were VERY lucky to get them, since most of the time they are booked solid. You must reserve your room(s) by October 4, 2002, or else we will lose them and the discount. You can call the 800 Reservation number or the hotel direct at 706-549-4433. When you reserve, be sure to mention the three letter code "UCB". This will get you your room at $89. The hotel is located next to Downtown Athens and is roughly 500 yards from the Journalism Building. PARKING: While Athens is a very easy city to navigate, there is always a problem with parking. However, here are a few options: 1. North Campus Deck: NOTE: this is a pay deck. So unless you have a wad of cash to throw around (and what Quizbowler doesn't?) I would avoid parking there, even though it is only a short 200 yards downhill to the Journalism Building. 2. Tate Center Lot: Even though there is a sign that says "24 Hour Pay Lot," it is free to park there on the weekends. This is one of the best places to park on campus due to its central locale. It is only a short walk through the Tate Center to the Journalism Building across the street (the big brick building with no windows). 3. Psychology Lot: These are the closest parking spots to the Journalism Building. They are also very popular with some students using the Memorial Hall computer labs. Try here first. If they're full (which is doubtful), go to the Tate Center. 4. My suggestion (if you're up to the walk, weather permitting) is to leave your car at the Holiday Inn, walk down Lumpkin to Baldwin Street and turn left towards the Journalism Building (on the right past the traffic light for Sanford Drive). DIRECTIONS: I- From Atlanta / North Georgia / Tennessee: Take I 75 South to I-285 East to I-85 North. Go north until you get to exit 106 (University Parkway – Athens, AKA GA 316). Take 316 all the way until it dumps you onto the Atlanta Highway. The Holiday Inn and UGA is roughly five miles on your right. II- From South Georgia / Florida: Take I-75 North and take the Macon By-pass (unless you plan to stop there). Continue north until exit 187 (GA 83 North). Take this road as you pass through Monticello (home of Tricia Yearwood) and Madison (home of no one in particular). Once pass Madison, look for sign pointing to US 441 North. Take 441 North to the Athens 10 Loop and go east. Exit at the "Athens Airport – Downtown Athens" exit. Turn left onto Oconee Street, which will then become Broad Street. UGA is on the left. The Holiday Inn is farther down on the left. III- From Mississippi / Alabama and points West: Either…. 1. Take I-20 East to I-285 North/East to I-85 North and follow the directions given in part I. 2. Take I-85 North through Atlanta and follow the directions in part I. IV: From North Carolina / Virginia / northern South Carolina: take I- 85 South to exit 150 for US 441 South – Commerce. Take 441 South and go straight when you reach the GA 10 Loop. This will become MLK Drive. Keep going until you reach an intersection where there is a tall and long railroad bridge (look up, you can't help but see it). Turn right onto that street and go under yet another rail bridge (this one obviously not in use). Turn left onto Thomas Street. Go pass the Classic Center (the convention hall) and then turn right onto Broad. UGA is on the left. The Holiday Inn is farther down on the left past Lumpkin Street. V: From Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina: Take I-20 to exit 172 (US 78 West). This road will take you straight into Downtown Athens. VI- Airlines: For those who can afford to fly, believe it or not, Athens is served by a major Airline (US Airways). However, 1)- you fly in from Charlotte and 2)- it's a commuter airplane. If you choose to fly into Atlanta, you will either have to call a shuttle service or rent a car from the airport and follow the directions listed above (number III, part 2). DINING: The Journalism Building is located close to Downtown Athens, which has a wide variety of restaurants (mind you there is a walk uphill). I personally recommend The Grill (a 24 hour diner), Rocky's or The Mellow Mushroom (Pizza and other Italian food). There are also some fast food eateries farther west on Atlanta Highway and near the mall (if you have time). Teams will received upon arrival to the hotel a map of Athens, restaurants, theatres, etc. Once again, if you have any questions, please feel free to email Robin Richards at Quizdogs_at_... or write to: UGA College Bowl 1050 South Lumpkin Street #407 Athens, GA 30605 TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE: As of press time, we plan to have registration from 845am to 915am, a pre-game meeting at 915am and the first round to commence play at 930am. Lunch will be after either rounds four or five. Thanks for your interest in the Lewis Grizzard Tournament and we hope to see you in Athens in October.
