In its final year, the old class AA was defined as those schools with between 700 and 1500 students (barring exceptions which allowed certain schools to play up or down), and contained 86 total schools.

VHSL Class AA consisted of VHSL Region I, VHSL Region II, VHSL Region III, and VHSL Region IV. The state tournament was a double-elimination bracket consisting of the top two teams from each of those regions.
