David H. Hickman High School started participating in quiz bowl due to the persistence of Adam Sperber, who was the driving force behind the Hickman team for the first few years of its existence. During the 2012-2013 season, Itamar Naveh-Benjamin led the team to rapid improvement, to where they consistently placed second at most events behind Ladue.

Their only nationals appearances have been at the 2010 HSNCT where they went 5-5; the 2012 NSC where a standby team of Avery Wagner and Itamar Naveh-Benjamin went 5-9; the 2013 NSC, where Hickman A tied for 31st and Hickman B placed 69th; the 2014 HSNCT, where Hickman's team went 6-5 and tied for 77th place; the 2015 HSNCT, where Hickman's team went 7-5 and tied for 53rd place; and the 2016 HSNCT, where Hickman's team went 9-5 and tied for 21st place.

The Hickman team also began hosting the Kewpie Academic Tournament in January 2012.

In 2016, Hickman won the NAQT Missouri Qualifier and the Class 4 MSHSAA State Championship for the first time.

Hickman collaborated with Washington to produce WHAQ (Washington-Hickman Academic Questionfest) for the 2016-2017 season.
