VHSL Class 6A contained schools with the largest enrollment sizes that participated in VHSL Scholastic Bowl. 55 schools were part of Class 6A in 2017, and the class comprised schools with enrollments roughly over 1,927 students (barring exceptions which allowed certain schools to play up or down). It was founded after the 2014 VHSL Realignment, which overhauled the VHSL classification system. The class was renamed VHSL Class 6 in the 2018 VHSL Realignment.

VHSL Class 6A consisted of VHSL Region 6A North and VHSL Region 6A South from 2014-2017. Teams qualified for the regional tournaments based on their rank within their new VHSL conference, unlike the old system, which used districts. Conferences often spanned wider geographical areas than districts, and teams did not necessarily have to play other teams in their conference until the beginning of the playoffs, instead opting to play their district regular season.

For a chronological listing of state tournament winners and runners-up, see the main VHSL Scholastic Bowl page.
