In 2004, Thomas Jefferson won the NAQT HSNCT and finished second at the PACE NSC. They defeated Maggie Walker in the finals at HSNCT and lost to them at the finals of the NSC; this was the second straight year that the same two teams made the finals of both tournaments, and the second straight year that TJ defeated their opponent at NAQT but lost at PACE. The final game at PACE is sometimes called the greatest high school quizbowl match ever played, and marked this team's only loss while playing their full A team in tossup/bonus formats during the 2004 season.

Both the NAQT and PACE teams consisted of Sam Lederer, Jacob Oppenheim, Will Sullivan, and Steve Young.
