SOCIAL

The St. Olaf College Invitational Academic Learnament (often abbreviated as SOCIAL) is an annual fall high school quiz bowl tournament run by St. Olaf College and the Minnesota Quiz Bowl Alliance (MQBA). Started in 2004, SOCIAL is usually run on an NAQT A set on the last Saturday in October. Beginning in 2013, SOCIAL featured two separate upperclassmen and underclassmen divisions, with the varsity division using an A set and the underclassmen division using an NAQT middle school set, although in 2017 and 2018 the underclassmen division returned to using an A set. As SOCIAL frequently takes place close to Halloween, players occasionally attend in costume.

The St. Olaf quiz bowl program died in 2018, so the tournament was moved to Burnsville High School and renamed as the South of Cities Invitational Academic Learnament. The 2019 iteration was cancelled due to a lack of interest caused by a scheduling conflict with Mounds View's RAFT mirror, and in 2020 SOCIAL was replaced by the MQBA's TRIVIA tournament. In 2021, the MQBA announced plans to bring back SOCIAL in-person at Burnsville.
