Gaius Stern ran Berkeley's Quiz Bowl club for a while. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland before becoming a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley. He received the Carper Award in 2004. While at Maryland, Stern assisted John Nam and Ramesh Kannappan of the University of Maryland who co-founded a predecessor organization to the Academic Competition Federation.
