The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance hosted the 2011 NAQT Missouri Qualifier on March 5, 2011 at the University of Missouri-Columbia under the direction of Jeffrey Hill and Matt Chadbourne. Twenty-one teams from sixteen schools participated, including six schools eligible for the small school title. Savannah A won the tournament after a one game final against Helias A, while Centralia took home the small school title, finishing tied for eighth overall.

Teams marked with * were eligible for the small school title

Format

The tournament used NAQT IS-104 with untimed NAQT rules. The twenty-one teams were divided into three pools of 7 teams each, and they played a round robin. The top 2 teams in each pool advanced to the championship bracket, the next 2 teams in each pool advanced to consolation bracket 1, the next 2 teams in each to consolation bracket 2, and the remaining team in each to consolation bracket 3. Each bracket played a crossover playoff in which teams played all other teams in their bracket that they had not yet played. Following the playoffs, teams were ranked by record against teams in the same playoff bracket only.

Results

Following the playoffs, the championship bracket results were:

  • 1. Savannah A: 4-1, 319 ppg
  • 2. Helias A: 4-1, 284 ppg
  • 3. Villa Duchesne: 3-2, 278 ppg
  • 4. Rock Bridge A: 3-2, 277 ppg
  • 5. Eureka A: 1-4, 225 ppg
  • 6. Jefferson City: 0-5, 133 ppg

Savannah A and Helias A played a one game final to determine the champion; Savannah won the final 410-190 to win the fourth annual NAQT Missouri Qualifier. Villa Duchesne and Rock Bridge A played a tiebreaker game, which Rock Bridge A won 420-150 to take home third place. All four of these teams qualified for HSNCT and NSC once more at this tournament; all four had previously qualified for both tournaments. Since fifth place Eureka A had also qualified for HSNCT at a prior tournament, Jefferson City received a bid to HSNCT as the highest-ranked team without a bid prior to the tournament.

Centralia finished 3-2 in consolation bracket 1, while Pilot Grove finished 2-3 in the same bracket. As a result, an advantaged final was played for the small school championship, with Centralia holding the advantage; Centralia won the first game 260-145 to take home the small school title. Centralia qualified for HSNCT once again for finishing tied for eighth overall out of 21 teams. Defending small school champion North Shelby finished third among small schools with a 1-4 record in consolation bracket 1.

Sam Haynes of Jefferson City was the top scorer in the preliminary rounds, with an average of 97.5 points per game, and was thus recognized as the top individual at the awards ceremony; she averaged 80.5 points per game overall. Charlie Fritz of Villa Duchesne had a higher average throughout the entire tournament, averaging 92.27 points per game (95.83 ppg in the prelims).

MOQBA Award for Outstanding Student Involvement

During the awards ceremony, the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance presented the first ever MOQBA Award for Outstanding Student Involvement to Sam Haynes of Jefferson City High School for her role in establishing and directing the Bill Currie Memorial Tournament. [1]
