Prior to the 2014 VHSL Realignment, VHSL Region I was a VHSL region in class AA, consisting of schools with 700 to 1500 students lying, for the most part, in the Hampton Roads area, other areas east of interstate 95, and in the Southside area of the Commonwealth. It contained the Battlefield District, Bay Rivers District, and Southside District. Like all VHSL regions, it sent two teams to the VHSL Scholastic Bowl state championship tournament for the sixteen-year duration of the original Scholastic Bowl tournament structure.
