2024 MSHSAA State Championship
The 2024 MSHSAA State Championship were held on May 3-4, 2024. Classes 1-3 competed on Friday and Classes 4-6 played on Saturday.
Questions and Format
Questions for Districts and State were once again provided by NAQT in the 22 tossup-bonus format. All questions were worth 10 points each with no powers or negs.
To produce the question sets for conferences and the state series, IS-221A, IS-223A, and IS-228 were unavailable for use during the regular season in Missouri.
Districts
Eight district tournaments in each of the six classes were held on April 13. District championship game matchups are available on the MSHSAA website.
Quarterfinals
Quarterfinal matches on April 23 consisted of best two-of-three matchups between the winners of two adjacent districts. The winner of each quarterfinal advanced to the remaining rounds of the state championship.

State Finals
The Class 1-3 state finals on May 3 and the Class 4-6 state finals on May 4 were held at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The state finals consisted of a preliminary round robin, with the top two teams advancing to the championship game and the bottom two teams advancing to the consolation game.
While the preliminary schedule is a full round robin, the order that the games are played rotates each year. The Class 1-3 finals on Friday mistakenly used the schedule for the 2025 tournament. The Class 4-6 schedule was later corrected to follow the order prescribed by the 2023-24 MSHSAA Scholar Bowl manual.

Entering the final preliminary round, St. Joseph Central and Lindbergh were 2-0 and Rolla and Republic were 0-2. Notes
- Smithville's 350-280 win in the Class 5 District 8 final snapped Savannah's streak of 23 consecutive district championships dating back to the school's first district championship in 2000. The longest active streak became St. Joseph Central's 10 consecutive championships dating to 2014. With Houston and Kickapoo also losing their district championship games, Central's is the only streak active as of 2024 that extends before 2021 into the four class era.
- Because of increasing enrollment and the championship factor applied to private schools, Lutheran (Kansas City) became the first school to win a district in three different classes in the six class era (Class 1 in 2021, Class 3 in 2022-2023, and Class 4 in 2024), later winning quarterfinals and advancing to the state championship all four years. This was never accomplished during the four class era, when the enrollments of private schools were inflated by a constant multiplier rather than considering past performance in the MSHSAA championship series.
- The #2 seed won the championship in four of six classes, reversing the result of the preliminary game in three. This was the most non-#1 seeds to win a state championship in a single state tournament since at least 2002 and probably all-time. However, in all six classes, the state champion had the best record outright, or had the most points across all four rounds when tied for the best record.
- In the 28 years MSHSAA has run the state championship, not counting the first tournament in 1996, this was only the third time (after 2002 and 2016) that none of the champions had won a championship at the previous season's state tournament.
