Athens is a public high school north of Springfield in downstate Illinois. It competes in Class A, the "small school" division, of the Illinois High School Association's State Championship series.
Like nearby Springfield-area small-schools - Williamsville, New Berlin, PORTA, & Pleasant Plains, Athens has proven that in successful years that it ranks among the best small-school quiz bowl programs in the state & nation. Winning the 2018 Masonic Class A State championship & placing in the NAQT SSNCT playoffs in 2018 & 2019.
Since 2018, Athens has hosted its Frosh-Soph Tournament attracting the likes of rising programs from across Central & Western Illinois.
