James "Jim" Garrick was the head coach of Dorman High School from 1988 to 2001. During his tenure there, he coached Dorman to victories at the 1989 NAC, 1991 NAC, 1991 PAC, and the 1991 Stars 2000, and co-coached South Carolina All-Stars at the 1993 PAC. He was also one of the founders and directors of ACE Quizbowl Camps, for which he received the 2000 Benjamin Cooper Academic Ambassador Award, along with ACE cofounders J.R. Barry and Hodges Lewis. Garrick probably began hosting the popular Dorman Cavalier Academic Challenge tournament around the early 1990s.
Prior to his career at Dorman, Garrick coached Carolina to victory in the inaugural 1987 TOC.
