Perhaps I can shed a little light on what happened, at least from this player's POV. During the round in question, we (Pitt) were playing State College HS A. Shortly in to the round(TU#3), Adam Schaible and I recognize two of the tossups already read were from the packets we had practiced on the previous Thursday. We begin to protest the round. State College also agrees that some questions are from the archive. Well, the moderator puts the game on hold, and sends the scorekeeper to see what's going on. He comes back with news that we're the only room to protest the round, and Samer comes in to vehemently deny any shenanigans in his packet. So, still under protest, we finish the "game." I keep a rough count of the questions from the archive, and it's at least ten. So after the game, we lodge a more formal protest with Rob and Rhiannon, pointing out that the questions were plagiarized from the Western Invitational Tournament '96 packets by BYU A and Caltech. So they compare the packet to the ones we pointed out on the archive, and agree that they were, indeed, plagiarized. To make up for the tainted game, that round is replayed with questions from Illinifest. I'm unsure as to when the disqualification ruling came down, but we did not find out until the very end of the day. To sum it all up, I'm highly disappointed in what happened. I don't know who on Penn was responsible, but I do hope that some sanctions are taken (at least internally by Penn) to ensure that this never, ever happens again. -- Eric P.
