Every time this thread or topic comes up, I always put in a plug for the following upset, of which I was a part: In 1994, a team of Arthur Fleming, myself, Ram Kannappan, and Misha Bernard (then M. Swisdak's girlfriend) played at Philadelphia Experiment I. Arthur and I were freshmen, and we sucked. Georgia Tech A had blanked us at ACF Nationals just three months earlier, 400+ to -5. Ram, however blue his quiz bowl blood, was in 8th grade at the time. And Misha was not a quiz bowl player at all; she did not attend practices or tournaments, and was only playing to fill in our fourth seat and accompany Marc to the tournament. Our victims? Double national champ (ACF and CBI) Chicago A: John Sheahan, Sendhil Revuluri, Peter Freeman, and Kevin Klowden, I believe (but not sure about Freeman). John Edwards was moderating the match, and said he derived great glee from watching his team lose without him. The packet responsible for this upet? Written by Boston University and edited by Jennie Rosenbaum (now Matthews). Although they had a bye, Marc Swisdak and John Nam declined to watch, saying they didn't want to see the slaughter. Chicago, apparently awakened from their complacent slumbers by this embarrassment, went on to win the tournament. I really don't think this upset can be topped, ever. Two freshmen, a layperson, and an 8th grader beating the national champs, and not just anywhere, but at a masters tournament. Matt
