I know I've gotten questions on books that I haven't read because I've heard the book come up often enough in quizbowl that I was able to deduce the answer from my limited knowledge. However, against someone who has actual knowledge of the book, I wouldn't stand a chance, and thus those situations are far more rare than me getting a tossup because I actually read the work in question. I also agree that no one is entitled to get questions just because they've read the work or because the questions is in their area of study. However, I would say that a well-written question should, first and foremost, reward a deep knowledge of the subject in such a way that preferrably the person who knows a lot about the subject will be able to get it before someone whose knowledge is mostly tangential.
