Well, first of all, Oak Ridge is right close to Knoxville, and is actually about 2 hours from Chattanooga. I don't know what most people consider to be "right close," but 2 hours is not, at least in my humble opinion. As for responding to Chris's comments, I believe his comments asserting that your average high school quizbowler would go for location and crappy tournament over a well-run academic tournament iare certainly more his opinion than actual fact. Speaking on the issue of this year's ICT location, I find it unfortunate for us at UTK, but on the whole, a fair and reasonable proposition. We lost our DII eligibility by qualifying for ICT last year, so qualifying for DI undergrad would have been hopeful at best this year. But that said, we are in line for an automatic bid for hosting the NAQT Midsouth Sectional this spring. However, viewing current funding issues for out team, even with this auto-invite, we will probably not be able to attend due to lack of school support for out team. That is definitely a bummer, but I think it is perfectly fair for the west coast teams to finally have a major tournament of national importance in their neck of the woods. Needless to say, I'm sure we will try to raise the funds to travel to LA for ICT, but we may not be able to, and I'm not in love with quizbowl enough at this point to pay a substantial amount out of my own pocket to travel out there. Especially when I would probably be the only person on my team who would even consider doing so, leaving me to play solo and subsequently get my ass handed to me. Anyways, that is just my viewpoint as a member of a momentarily financially-challenged program. I see the pros and cons of each side of the argument. P.
