Having never seen a CBI question before in my life, from what I can tell this seems awfully Beall-ish. Having actually played Beall questions I can tell you I refuse to ever play that format, but the case still seems to hold in high school. Teams shell out assloads of money to play subpar questions with favoritism run rampant, why? Because it's been around the longest (even if it isn't the most respectable). Maybe the reason is that the questions ARE catering to the majority of people. CBI seems to have alienated many of the good hardcore players who, if they showed up, would walk all over the tournament. That leaves the field open for other teams that aren't as competitive to play in with a good chance of winning. As much fun as quiz bowl is period, going to a tournament and knowing that since Kentucky, Florida and Emory are there you're fighting for fourth place is pretty disheartening. Junior Bird tournaments seem to be a good thing (in my humble and inexperienced opinion), but they need to be marketed more. GT has plans to reinstitute MLK this year (I'm not promising it will, but it's definitely been brought up) and there is talk of the return of Heinrich Boll and a Div. II tournament in the fall as well. I agree heartily as one who learned from having his ass kicked that we shouldn't dumb down questions for new players to the point of obscenity, if they don't get hard questions they won't get any better. But the existence of a separate field for them to grow into their new environment without being totally thrashed is a big =D idea, like unto JV in high school. But like anything, they eventually have to embark from safety into the chaotic world of 8th year hardcore grad student players, because, well, some of them will be like that in the future too. Banning dinosaurs is foolish, because they keep new players on their toes and keep them a little humble, and hey, even the greatest players of all time can have a bad round and lose. Courting administration types rather than players, perhaps? That's the only thing I can think of that CBI has consistently done effectively.
