On the heels of our recent Buzzerfest VI announcement(now firmly obscured by the pages of yet another repetitive canon expansion debate), Princeton College Bowl would also like to announce its first-ever Trash tournament, Jersey Trash 2003. The tournament will be April 27, 2003, and any questions should be sent to tournament directors Brad Klein (bklein at princeton dot edu) and Chris Frankel (cfrankel at princeton dot edu). Packets and inquiries on tournament mirroring should be sent by e-mail to Chris Frankel. Fees: Base fee per team: $100 Participation in Buzzerfest VI: -$30 Buzzer discount: -$10 (n/a if team is already bringing a set to Buzzerfest) Travel discounts: negotiable for really distant teams. Minimum fee: $50 Packet submission dates (same as for Buzzerfest). by March 24: -$30 by April 7th: -$0 by April 14th: +$15 after April 14th: +$25 and your team plays at the discretion of the tournament staff. Packet Distribution: 3/3 Sports 3/3 Movies 3/3 Music 3/3 TV **1980-present for all of the above ***2/2 Pre 1980's, sports/music, movies/tv 3/3 TRASH lit (Magazines, Children's books, Comic Books, etc... please limit Sci-fi/Fantasy to 1/1) 2/2 Toys & Games 2/2 Sex/Drugs/Alcohol 1/1 Floof (Fashion, Cosmetics, Girly stuff) 1/1 Computers & Internet 1/1 Food & Drink 2/2 Your Choice 26/26 Total **By that, we mean that clues for all of the questions should involve works, happenings, episodes, etc... that occurred after 1980 and would thus be more accessible to college age players. If the best clue involves something from earlier then that, then either that clue can be used as the giveaway, or the subject should be relegated to the pre-80's distribution or not used as an answer at all. ***Only major subjects should appear as answers here. Obscurata, one hit wonders, or any other answers that the average undergrad player would likely not recognize will not be allowed. As you can see, the goal of the tournament will be to cater to younger, undergraduate age players by avoiding reliance on outdated pop culture references as subject matter, which is a common complaint about Trash tournaments now. After all, quiz bowl is at heart a college game, and the material should remain accessible to college players (although they should be challenging, as this tournament is NOT a Trash junior bird). In terms of technical issues on the questions, tossups should be 5-8 lines in length (under standard 12 font Times New Roman). 6 part bonuses, physical challenge bonuses, all or nothing bonuses, and visual bonuses should not be used at all, 30-20-10 bonuses should be kept to a minimum, and bonus intros should be brief and to the point. Mature content is acceptable, though it should be well-written and should not comprise a large share of the packet. Packets should be written as MS-Word documents, and any other questions on packet issues should be sent to me. -Chris Frankel -Princeton College Bowl
