College bowl is most fun when you either a) learn cool new facts or b) use
your own knowledge. Sure, I can buzz in with "Hall effect", but I haven't a
clue what it means, and it seems really pointless, except for the gaining
points, oxymoronical as that statement may sound. And any time I get an
econ question is just plain scary. The college bowl crowd should be diverse
enough to encompass numerous people in different fields of study. If
someone wants to put on metallic chemistry you'd know from taking a course
on it, fine. It may inspire me to learn something. I guess the point is
that it seems that when I do try to expand the canon, those questions are
often singled out for editing, perhaps because what I'm introducing isn't
familiar to the editor. But as I said, college bowl is just more fun when
you can use the knowledge you've acquired beyond having read through last
year's ACF packets and played for 3 years.
And, indeed iconography rocks.
