The University of Rochester's Thelion Society is proud to announce that it plans to host two tournaments this fall, its first forays into hosting college tournaments. The first tournament will be the Frederick Douglass Invitational Championship (FDIC), to be held on Saturday, September 27, and the second, the J. Benjamin Hindes Pre- Memorial Tournament (JBH), will be held on the following day, Sunday, September 28. FDIC will be an academic tournament designed to be a way for schools to introduce their new players to the world of college quizbowl. We feel that there are no tournaments around early in the year that are appropriate for new players, both in terms of difficulty of questions, and in terms of having to submit packets. Therefore, we have decided to purchase a set of Invitational Series questions from NAQT. We feel that these questions will be accessible enough for new players to do well on, but hard enough for more experienced players to still compete on. Since we feel it is important not only to introduce new players to collegiate-level questions, but also to introduce them to collegiate-level competition, we are opening the field up to all college teams, regardless of experience. In fact, we encourage older players to come participate, even though the questions will be a tad on the easy side for them, in order to give younger players an idea of what good college players can do. JBH is our first attempt at hosting an intercollegiate trash tournament. Named after one of the Thelion Society's founders, and the owner of the club's namesake mini-van, this tournament will be packet submission, and will be open to any team that wishes to attend. Once again, the goal of this tournament is to introduce new players to what goes on in college quizbowl, in this case introducing them to trash, which they probably did not have access to in high school. If you are interested in attending either or both of these events, or just have a question about them, feel free to send an e-mail to quizbowl_at_... (quizbowl _at_ mail.rochester.edu). Since we are announcing this so early, we will not consider any registration binding until much later; right now we just want to know who might be interested in attending, so don't be shy about letting us know that you are. More detailed information regarding registration fees for both tournaments, as well as packet requirements for JBH will be posted as the dates of the tournaments get closer. Hopefully, we will see everyone in September. Michael Adelman President and Business Manager, the University of Rochester Thelion Society
