[I checked my Sent file for the particulars and discovered to my horror that I never sent this out -- humble apologies for the delay.] As mentioned in the COTKU messages, UTC will host the Big Lots Clearance Open in Chattanooga on Sun., Oct. 19, 2003. This is a trash tournament, open to all players regardless of collegiate affiliation or lack thereof. We are mirroring FOGHAT with questions by Jeremy White and Ben Lea. meaning packet submission is NOT required. However, teams can still earn a packet discount by writing academic questions for us to use in either our high school tournament on 10/11 or our collegiate tournament (COTKU) on 10/18. There will also be a K-Tel Hell-style music game included, run by James Quintong. I believe he's planning a covers round. TIME & PLACE: To help our long-distance friends, we'll begin registration at 8:30 AM EDT on Sun. 10/19/03, with play starting at 9 AM. Based on typical field sizes, we may finish as early as 5 PM and surely no later than 7:30. Tournament headquarters will be Holt 124, unless we get a bigger field and have to move to Grote 129 (we'll post signs telling you which.) Either way, it's adjoining the same parking lot on the UTC campus. ELIGIBILITY: This tournament is open to anyone; an opposable thumb is helpful but not required. Teams do not have to have any academic affiliation. If you want to play, and you tell me in time, you're in. If you want to make yourself available as a free agent to join a team -- or if you have a partial team in need of free agent help -- let me know and I'll pass it along. FORMAT: 20 questions per round, untimed. Again, there's no packet submission. Teams will be four players each, with alternates OK as long as there are no substitutions in mid-match. Depending on the number of teams, the format will be round robin or bracketed round robin. This of course means I need to know the number of teams in advance. FEES: Base fee $90 per team Minimum fee after discounts: $50 per team [*except* that discounts for writing Trevor's Trivia and/or COTKU questions can drop the fee further, to a minimum of $40] Discounts: - $10 for an experienced reader for Big Lots itself (*or* said reader can join us for dinner at Provino's after COTKU Sat. night 10/18 if they'd prefer, and who wouldn't?) - $10 for an experienced reader for COTKU Saturday 10/18 (*or* said reader can join us for dinner at Provino's after COTKU Sat. night if they'd prefer, and, again, who wouldn't?) - $10 for each team member who officiates at the Trevor's Trivia: Bob Selcer Memorial HS tournament on Sat., Oct. 11 [unless the same discount was applied to COTKU fees] - $5 for a working buzzer (additional $5 for a second buzzer if it's needed) - $15, *plus* a free set of questions, for each original packet (or equivalent) written for the aforementioned high school tournament (Trevor's Trivia) and sent to me by 10/5/03. If you're interested and need packet specs, e-mail me. - $15, *plus* a free set of questions, for each original packet (or equivalent) written for our collegiate tournament (COTKU) and sent to me by 10/12/03. If you're interested and need packet specs, e-mail me. ACCOMMODATIONS: The Clarion Hotel has a limited number of rooms available at a discount rate of $66/night for Friday night 10/17 and/or Sat. night 10/18. They're holding that rate through Sat. 10/4/02. The Clarion's number is (423) 756-5150; tell them you're with the academic quizbowl. WHO'S IN CHARGE HERE: Surprise, surprise. Tournament director will be Charlie Steinhice. Contact me at steinhic_at_... for further details.
