Good evening, Thirteen teams competed today at the 2003 ACF Mid-Atlantic Regional, held in "balmy" College Park, Maryland. They played a full round robin of thirteen rounds... creating the mess you will see below: Princeton 10-2 (+80 head-to-head point differential) Virginia A 10-2 (-20 head-to-head pt. diff.) Rutgers-New Brunswick 10-2 (-60 head-to-head pt. diff.) Swarthmore B* 10-2** Pittsburgh A 9-3 Maryland 8-4 Swarthmore A 6-6 Virgnia B* 4-8 Carnegie Mellon* 3-9 Delaware* 3-9 American University* 3-9 Johns Hopkins* 2-10 Pittsburgh B* 0-12 *denotes Division II team. **Swarthmore B (Will Schriker, Emily Ullman, Micaela Baranello, and Scott Blaha) easily won the Division II title by six games over Virginia B. Virginia B (Jason Sacks, Steve "X" Yang, Tareq "The Moose" Elikyar, and Serge "The Great Gazoo" Egelman) took home a $10 Blockbuster gift card for finishing second. Swarthmore B, for winning, took home a $25 Border's Bookstore gift card, a Golden Book of Disney's Mother Goose, a spoon, and a dish full of Halloween candy for their excellent efforts. Now you may notice that Swarthmore B had the same record as the other three teams. I made what I now admit may have been a questionable decision, in that I declared Swat B the D-II champion and did not allow them to compete for the D-I crown. I simply wanted separate champions in each division. Based on tiebreakers of total points and head-to-head, they would have been third either way (1-2 among the four teams), and Swat B seemed content with their prizes and going home. In any case, if this caused any harm on Swarthmore B's part, I take full blame for it. So with the remaining three teams, we were left with a true circle of death. I seeded the teams based on head-to-head point differential. The #2 and #3 teams, Virginia A and Rutgers respectively, played Round 14 for the right to meet Princeton in Round 15. Round 14 (2-3 game): Virginia A 330, Rutgers-NB 165 Stats: Virginia A: Gwen Archard 5-0, S.R. "Joe" Sidarth 4-1, Mrgan Saxby 3- 0, Ben Mudrak 2-0 Rutgers-NB: Jason Keller 4-3, Matt Rolnick 1-0, Larry Goldman 1-0, Saul Foresta 0-0 Round 15 (championship game): Virginia A 275, Princeton 260 Stats: Virginia A: Gwen 3-0, Joe 2-1, Morgan 3-0, Ben 2-1 Princeton: Dan Benediktson 0-0, Chris Frankel 5-0, Phil Kidd 3-1, Ray Yang 1-1 Note that Princeton, down 35 going into the last toss-up, gets it, needs 30 on the bonus, but gets 10. A very competitive match all the way through. Princeton also earned a $10 Blockbuster gift card for finishing second in Division I. Congratulations to Virginia A (Gwen, Joe, Morgan, and Ben) for winning Division I. For their efforts, they earned a $25 Borders gift card, lots of Halloween candy, and a "golden bowl" to put it in, complete with a copy of _The Golden Bowl_ by Henry James. Individual awards and thank yous in the next message... -Adam
