The quote is from the proposal we adopted in NAQT when establishing separate divisions and resolving that we would recognize a separate undergraduate title -- only it seems we never translated the policy into our published rules, and neglected this year to inform hosts that ties for these titles should be broken only with an additional game or series of games. Since the Princeton-Harvard playoff that we would have required as a tiebreaker wasn't played (entirely through our own oversight in communicating the policy; no fault accruing to our most excellent hosts at Harvard), our remedy is to recognize officially both teams as co-champions. Each team will, accordingly, receive automatic invitations to the ICT--congratulations to both! For the record, NAQT's policy is not to use head-to-head results nor any of the common total points/point differential criteria as tiebreakers for final standings at all -- if the tie is for one of our titles, it should be broken by additional game play if possible, or else the tie is allowed to stand; if the tie is for non-title positioning in standings, in our eyes the tie simply stands as is. (If more than two teams are tied by won-loss record for a title, no team should be eliminated using any method other than additional playoff games--though other tiebreakers could be employed to determine, for example, which of three teams tied would receive a bye while the other two played-off for the right to face the third team for the title.) We will make certain that this policy finds a place in our official rules, and that it is communicated in future to the hosts of our tournaments! Eric Hillemann, for NAQT
